Bill 15, an omnibus bill brought forward by the Ontario government, has brought many changes to the rules and regulations governing the Ontario insurance industry. In previous tips, we have outlined changes to the mandatory accident benefits coverage, and other policy changes which will help to fight insurance fraud and stabilize or reduce auto insurance rates.

As part of this bill, there are new rules which tow truck operators must follow:

They will require your permission to tow your vehicle.

Their rates must be publicly posted.

Payment by credit card must be accepted.

An itemized invoice must be presented to you before payment.

Any storage charges must be clearly explained to you.

You must be told exactly where your vehicle is and allowed access to your vehicle and its belongings at no additional charge.
