A First of Its Kind in Canada

Back in February, a major Canadian insurer announced that it would soon make flood coverage available on personal lines property policies in Ontario and Alberta. Until now, loss or damage caused by true overland flooding on such policies has never been available to consumers; it has always been an exclusion. The coverage is being offered as an endorsement on policies which have sewer back-up coverage in place. It responds to losses that result from the sudden accumulation or run-off of surface waters, including torrential rainfall and spring thaw. Another major insurer has just announced that it is rolling out a similar coverage in Alberta. Other insurers will likely follow suit in the future. Flooding is the most common type of natural disaster in Canada, and the flood in southern Alberta in 2013 was the most costly storm in Canadian history. Check with your insurance provider for details regarding this coverage and its availability.
